was absolutely considered to be crazy. He was familiar with criticism first hand as he declared that the groves on mars were caused by intelligent life. So he was basically trying to prove his predictions about planets beyond Neptune to gain respect in the science community.

The recent discovery of Uranus in 1846 created a frenzy of speculation by the uneducated and unequipped self proclaimed astronomers that there could be many more planets beyond Neptune. Even though this was a possibility, anyone who agreed in the scientific community would soon find themselves disenfranchised.

It gave credible scientific astronomers all the more reason to keep their mouths shut until they had something on film. Further more it was not popular in the 1800′s to replace an unknown with the letter X as it is today. We can thank Lowell for starting that trend but what did he really mean by X. The true modern origin of Planet X comes to us from a mathematician/astronomer named Percival Lowell that quite reasonably started an incredible inquiry to discover a planet that he believed was out there because of mathematical calculations derived from the planetary behavior of Uranus and Neptune. The math plus planetary behavior hypothesis of Uranus is responsible for the discovery of Neptune but the math did not completely add up.

In other words the calculations showed that a very large amount of mass was somewhere beyond Neptune and to Lowell that meant a planet or two or even more was beyond Neptune. He evasively coined the phrase “Trans-Neptune Planet early on which he boldly wrote of later in his memoirs of 1915.

Today these calculations and behaviors are virtually undisputed now that all of our know planetary bodies fit nicely into the calculation models and have been used to help find other bodies in orbit. Many scientist are still looking for Trans-Neptune Planets due to the overwhelming consensus that the math of the behavior adds up to more mass out there somewhere in our very own solar system.

Today we have a much the same yet quite different view of Planet X. The shocking secret behind the infamous name, Planet X may be interesting but it is even more shocking to read the many different explanations and descriptions of planet x.
